Sauter Carbon Offset Design introduces Black Magic, a zero carbon vessel that points to the way future tankers can reduce their GHG emissions by 6 billion tons over the next 20 year

Black Magic is a 4,000 ton Solar hybrid Vessel that reduces GHG emissions by 75 to 100% by harnessing energy from the sun, wind and waves, It features Mercedes Benz / MTU Bluetec engines to deliver the cleanest marine propulsion system the world has ever seen.

Richard Sauter head of design commented “Now that the North Pole is little more than a fragmented pile of frozen debris, cargo vessels going between Japan and Germany have cut 4000 miles off the journey. This is the good news. The bad news is that the Greenland ice sheet is likely to disappear a lot sooner than predicted”

The Independent : “For the first time in human history, the North Pole can be circumnavigated”

Black Maigic is the only realistic Super Green Alternative to the highly pollutant tankers in use and still being built at an alarming rate. Over the next 20 years a 75% reduction in emissions for the 16 supertankers mentioned below amounts to a 40 million ton reduction in GHG emissions..

China Daily : “China delivers world’s largest oil tanker”

The currently available green technology present in Black Magic includes:

· Mercedes Benz & MTU Bluetec diesel electric power generation
· Hydro and aerodynamic advances in wave piercing pentamaran hull design
· Azimuth counter rotating CLT high torque propeller systems.
· KER & Power sailing regeneration.
· State of the art fully rotational Wing Sails.
· Maximum solar cell deployment. (2,000 square meters)
· Energy efficient equipment, including AC & refrigeration with waste heat recovery
· Computerized energy management, maintenance & guidance.
· Lithium UPS

Solar cells, power sailing regeneration and plug-in power sources charge a lithium ion storage system that runs all hotel services including AC, day and night, The same lithium UPS allows Black Magic to achieve her maximum speed of 16 knots and navigate harbors and inland water ways with Zero emissions

Combine the above with 300 to 1,000kws of wing sail propulsion to arrive at virtually unlimited Zero Carbon Cruising at an average speed of 10kts. (With optional Sky Sail 12 kts)

Black Magic
A Bluetec Solar Hybrid Tanker
Displacement 4,000t, Length 120m, Beam 20m, Draft 6m, Service speed 12kts,
Green power installed;
MB/MTU Bluetec Power Generation 1,200kws, Wing Sail power 300 to 1,000kws, Solar Cells 200kws, Ker & Power Sailing Regeneration 100 to 200kws

Black Magic is a 10,000 tons per year Certifiable Carbon Offset Project. As such it achieves a reduction in GHG emissions equivalent to the average annual carbon footprint of 2,500 people across the globe

Yachts for long have been toys of the rich to show the world that they have finally arrived in life. Such contraptions whose primary purpose is snob value are unlikely candidates for saving the planet. Yet, there has been a extremely concerted effort by the yacht making industry as a whole, to go green.

IKKAR Concept Hybrid Yacht

Kicking the feature off, here is a concept yacht called the IKKAR, which has been put together by a Strate College design student named Julien Anglade. The IKKAR Yacht features a streamlined design to optimize the use of energy to propel itself. Also, the IKKAR is innovatiely designed to change its shape to suit the passengers needs. At low speeds, the IKKAR will drop the sides of its hull flat into the water. This will allow the passengers to float with the waves, thus enhancing the fair-weather sailing experience. The IKKAR Hybrid Yacht’s green credentials lie in the sail, which is impregnated with solid solar cells that will help propel this 150m long yacht that can accommodate all of 50 passengers.

Magnum Marine Hybrid 100 Yacht

Magnum Marine is known for making yachts that the high and mighty love to sail in. Now, Magnum Marine too has embraced green technology and has unveiled a 100-foot hybrid yacht. This aerodynamic yacht with an ultra low drag coefficient uses an electric motor for low speed propulsion with a 2600HP diesel engine kicking in at higher speeds. Designed by Alberto Mancini, the yacht is built with advanced materials like carbon fiber and composite materials to save weight. On board, lighting will use energy efficient LEDs and CFLs in another bid to reduce energy consumption. Come 2012, yacht connoisseurs will be able to lay their hands on one of these.

Arcadia Solar Powered Super Yacht

The sun is an inexhaustible source of energy, especially in the context of sailing, since most yachts spend most of their sailing hours in balmy weather. Arcadia has latched on to this fact and has thus started building super luxury yachts with hybrid means of propulsion. The ultra luxurious yachts that come in 75 and 175 variants use a mix of solar panels and diesel engines for propulsion. Thus, Arcadia is making sure that the swish set doesn’t get embarrassed by all that bespoke luxury by adding a good dose of the extremely essential green quotient.

Razor Hybrid Yacht

So far, we’ve been seeing huge luxo barges affordable only to a select few, very wealthy people. For the rest of us, who love ambling along the bay and soaking up the sun, here is a very radical looking bay cruiser called the Razor Hybrid Yacht. This 9-meter-long bay cruiser uses a fuel cell to generate electricity for powering its electric motor. That isn’t all, the Razor Hybrid gets its hybrid tag due to the presence of an internal combustion engine that uses low emission fuels like the LPG/CNG for propulsion. Full marks to designer Atanas Yenev for coming up with the sharp-looking Razor Hybrid Yacht, which looks like a perfect mix of affordability and planet friendliness.

Leviathan Solar/Wind Yacht

Yacht designs are breaking from the mundane, and here is the perfect example of one such design. Industrial designer Adam Valmassoi has designed a zero emission yacht called the Leviathan. This yacht features an aerodynamic design that looks extremely radical, to say the least. Propulsion is taken care of by two electric jet pump engines powered by wind turbines and solar panels on board the yacht. The green factor extends further to the yacht’s body, which is made of recycled polypropylene. Now, even the Greenpeace activists would go green with envy at the Leviathan planet-friendly credentials.

80m Eco Yacht from Rainsford Mann Design

Rainsford Mann Design have taken the eco tag very seriously and have thus outfitted their 80m Eco Yacht with several features that add to its eco quotient, while maintaining the feel of luxury. The Eco Yacht uses electricity to power the Azipull Thrusters providing it its propulsion. The vessel also uses 100sqm of PV modules and a vertical axis wind turbine that generates 30KW of green electrical power that is used to run the vessel low-power LED lighting systems. In addition to all these energy conserving ways, the Eco Yacht uses solar power for heating the yacht and sails to reduce fuel consumption by as much as 50% in suitable weather conditions. Like we said earlier, the Eco Yacht takes it eco tag a little too seriously. Three cheers to it.

Riparian Yacht

Hydrogen power meets solar energy in designer Adam Voorhees Riparian Yacht. The huge yacht is unusually shaped with a very catamaran-like shape. This shape will give the Riparian Yacht very good aerodynamics, thus enabling it to save energy for propulsion. Apart from this, the Riparian Yacht gets plenty of other sustainable features, such as the alignment of its skin that will let in or block natural light, thus minimizing the use of artificial lighting. All these features give the Riparian Yacht sterling green credentials that will help people unwind amid the vastness oceans, albeit in a sustainable way.

Code [e] ; A sun, wind and water powered yacht

As we are moving further into this eclectic list, the yachts too are getting more and more green, just like the Code [e]. The Code [e] is a yacht that uses a combination of the sun, the wind and even the water to propel itself through the vastness of the ocean. The Berret Racoupeau Yacht Design team has developed the Code [e], which has 40 square-meters of solar panels and two retractable VAWTs that together generate 1100 watts. It also has two hydro electric generators to provide electricity while sailing. All this green power is used both for sailing and powering the lighting and heating system of the yacht. We feel that the Code [e] should eliminate the hybrid propulsion system and embrace green energy in totality for propulsion.

Code-X Hybrid Yacht

Here is a yacht that is strictly for those addicted to speed on the water. The Code-X is a sleek-looking high performance yacht that looks more like a stealth airplane in water. Talking about performance, the Code-X has a hybrid engine that can power you through the water at more than 80 knots courtesy of the twin Ilmor Formula 1 engines that output all of 710HP of raw power. Before the green brigade jumps the gun and start screaming murder, they should also note that the Code-X can amble along at a perfectly sane 9 knots using its twin electric motors. The battery pack will use the sun to recharge itself via the on-board solar panels. Now, that is some Jekyll and Hyde behavior.

World’s first Hydrogen-Powered Research Yacht

The sea is a great reflection of the environmental happenings of our planet. Hence researching the wide oceans has been on for many decades now. Now, researchers plan to study sea pollution without causing any pollution themselves. How will they do that? With the Zero CO2, which is the world’s first hydrogen propelled yacht. This yacht will set sail in March of 2010 and will traverse the oceans in a bid to study the sea pollution caused by fossil fuels, and to also develop hydrogen propulsion technology. The yacht will use renewable energy generating systems to generate hydrogen and electricity on board. Let’s wish the crew all the very best for their very noble endeavor.

Solar Powered Esthec SuperYacht

After the slew of hybrid yachts, here is a yacht that uses only the sun for propulsion. And the Esthec SuperYacht isn’t another small yacht but a huge super yacht with all the luxury that accompanies such luxo barges. Designed by Dennis Ingemansson, the Esthec Superyacht is built of recylable materials and generates solar energy to propel its electric engine. Talking of luxury, the Esthec features an onboard swimming pool and hi-tech interiors. That is what you call sustainable luxury and for this, the Esthec gets EcoFriends thumbs up!

SunCat23 Solar Catamaran

After yachts, it is now the turn of catamarans to go green. Say hello to the SunCat23 Solar Catamaran that, like it’s name suggests, uses solar power for propulsion. The solar panels generate electricity which will drive the 2.8KW electric outdoor motor. Manufactured by Taiwan-based Horizon Yachts, the SunCat23 can carry 12 passengers in total luxury. The best part of the SunCat23 is that you will be able to go ahead and buy one for yourself this Christmas, as it has already hit serial production.

Yacht makers are suffering after international boat sales fell about 30 percent last year and some customers canceled orders amid the worst recession in six decades. At the Monaco Yacht Show last month, boat builders from across Europe, including London-based Burgess Yachts, said they’re lowering prices by as much as 20 percent to spur sales.

Italy is the world’s largest maker of mega-yachts, luxury vessels longer than 70 meters (230 feet). At the Monaco show, boatmakers said sales of smaller boats are drying up as their traditional buyers such as bankers, hedge fund executives and entrepreneurs lose access to credit.

Azimut yachts start at 300,000 euros. Some come fitted with spiral staircases, marble bathrooms and furnishings from the Fendi Casa collection.

Opulence

Ferretti’s most opulent offerings include custom- designed CRN yachts, which can exceed 200 feet. A similar length GiVi vessel comes with a gym, helicopter pad and what Ferretti calls a “wellness area. » The company sells boats starting at about 500,000 euros under nine brands, including Riva and Bertram.

New Kind of Buyer

A new kind of buyer is emerging, looking for greater comfort, lower fuel consumption and more environmentally friendly yachts that allow them to enter into protected areas, Aicon CEO Pasquale Siclari said, adding that buyers are tending to avoid showing off.
“The real rich continue to buy, » and yachts for 5 million euros are doing well, while boats at the lowest end of Aicon’s range at 1 million euros are suffering the most, Siclari said in an interview on board a company yacht during the show.

Signs of Recovery

Azimut Benetti has seen signs of recovery in the U.S. linked to financing, and the Russian market may be catching up even faster after dropping to zero earlier in the year, Vitelli said. Interest has emerged from the rest of the world over the past month and the company has found replacement buyers for orders that were canceled between October 2008 and March, he said.

Ferretti has received more orders following last month’s Cannes boat show than the same time last year, Basile said. It’s in talks on two boat orders from Russia.

Basile concedes he’d be willing to sell a boat “at a strong discount » if it had been left unsold for a year, a problem many yacht makers are having amid the recession. “That doesn’t mean to say that we will build boats from scratch to sell at a discount, » he said.

Aicon’s Siclari said that its sales in Greece and Central America were going well for his company.

Sales of Azimut Benetti yachts in the year ending August may have fallen about 37 percent to almost 700 million euros, while the Ferretti Group’s dropped about 11 percent to 800 million euros, the executives said. The CEO of Aicon, whose sales in the period ending August 2008 fell more than 60 percent to 70 million euros, declined to comment on sales in the most recent period.

The Genoa boat show is the world’s biggest, taking into account the land and port area dedicated to the event, according to UCINA. The show, which ends on Oct. 11, hosts 2,400 vessels.

As a sport, yachting may be all about harnessing the power of the wind, but for most superyachts, that’s where ecofriendliness ends.

Typically, these 45-meter-plus boats guzzle huge amounts of fuel while their owners host lavish parties that require high-powered amenities like air conditioning and fancy sound systems. But the green agenda has begun to reach even these behemoths of the sea, with marine architects and designers seeking ever more innovative ways to apply conservation technologies to their vessels.

When Luciano Benetton’s 50-meter Trib๠launched in 2007, it became the first private yacht to win the Green Star designation from the Italian classification society RINA. In order to earn the certificate, usually associated with cruise liners and oil tankers, the yacht had to meet a complex list of requirements, including special equipment for treating waste water and rubbish and the elimination of other emissions. (It didn’t have to forsake its Jacuzzi, gym, or luxurious kitchen, either.) The Green Star allowed the Trib๠access to coveted parts of the world’s waterways-such as in Alaska’s nature reserves or around Mexico’s Yucatà¡n-that require stringent compliance with nonpollution laws (available for charter for €185,000 per week; fraseryachts.com).

But for all its green credentials, the Trib๠is still powered by a diesel engine. At last month’s annual Monaco Yacht Show, several much more environmentally progressive yachts were on display. Among them: the 58-meter Ethereal-owned by Bill Joy, the inventor of Java and founding engineer of Sun Microsystems-which uses a hybrid electromechanical propulsion system that relies on rechargeable lithium-phosphate batteries. The stored energy allows the yacht to operate silently in “stealth mode” and runs the ship’s systems while at anchor, eliminating noise and exhaust. The windows and hatches are designed to control ambient temperature by filtering ultraviolet and infrared light. In line with its ethos, the yacht doesn’t come with water skis, but offers ecofriendly gear like kayaks and wakeboards (available for charter for €225,000 per week; camperandnicholsons.com).

Also on display in Monaco was the prototype for a futuristic-looking superyacht that relies solely on solar energy and wind power. The 59-meter Soliloquy, by 23-year-old U.K. design graduate Alastair Callender, will use advanced technology by the Australia-based Solar Sailor Holdings Ltd. in the form of an overhead beam that houses three automated, rigid solar sails, which create a dynamic form that improves the yacht’s propulsion (callenderdesigns.co.uk). The superstructure also incorporates a photovoltaic surface, which means that once all the blinds are out of the overhead beam, they offer a sun-collection area of more than 600 square meters. The solar energy is then stored in the yacht’s batteries, which can quietly power the on-board electronics. That mean zero emissions for a yacht that can travel at eight knots and requires a smaller crew than a traditional boat. Callender claims the system is so efficient it actually generates more power than it uses. “As you’re sitting in the Monaco harbor, you can even give back to the grid the electricity you’re not using,” he says. “In six hours, the yacht can generate the energy to power a four-bedroom house for eight days.”

The 69-meter-long Solar Gem, designed by Dennis Ingemansson, also features a hybrid electric system powered by solar and wind energy, but can cruise much faster, at a maximum speed of 22 knots (dennisingemansson.com). Also in Monaco, Feadship unveiled the 75.6-meter-long Aeon, a green concept yacht with a curvaceous exterior design inspired by the body of a whale shark and a surface largely equipped with solar paneling. Its propulsion is entirely electric, and the yacht runs on synthetic fuel that can be produced from natural gas, biomass, or algae. The engine room contains equipment for converting diesel into hydrogen, and all waste produced from the process-H2O, CO2, and heat-is reused. The hydrogen is then converted to electricity stored in fuel cells. The hybrid system will help the yacht achieve a top speed of 18 knots, which Feadship director Koos Zitman argues could not be achieved yet with solar technology alone.

Some designers are boldly challenging the traditional look of a yacht to increase the area available for solar panels and ultimately improve energy efficiency. At 38 meters wide and 58 meters long, the Wally-Hermes Yacht comes close to resembling a luxury home on the water. The company, a newly formed venture between its two namesakes, claims that the design requires less power at cruising speed than a more traditional-looking boat of equal size. The design incorporates photovoltaic panels covering nearly 900 square meters that can power most of the boat’s auxiliary systems. Though the yacht still has a diesel-electric propulsion hybrid engine, like many others, it is pushing in the ecofriendly direction. Who said green yachting had to be an oxymoron?
