Interview – Andrea MICHELI – Southern Wind Shipyards – 2010 MYS
Andrea MICHELI, Commercial Manager at Southern Wind Shipyards, spoke to us about the new and magnificent flagship THALIMA and several projects currently under construction, including a new 94 feet yacht devoted to performance
Southern Wind Shipyard was founded in 1991 by the Italian entrepreneur Willy Persico, the current Managing Director.
The headquarter where yachts are produced is in Cape Town, South Africa, in the industrial zone, a few kilometres from the International Airport and it spreads over a 17.000 sqm area, of which 12.000 sqm under roof.
Southern Wind is one of the very few shipyards which is able to carry out almost the whole construction in-house.
It is divided into two macro departments: one for lamination and the other for assembly, the latter is supported by four main production departments: carpentry and internal fitting, engineering and systems, steel and deck hardware. Construction is supervised by the technical office, the sale office and the purchasing office.
The staff is composed by 320 people, most of them are local, with a strong European influence in management, particularly from Italy.
Southern Wind Shipyard produces semi-custom composite sailing yachts based on the most advanced technologies combined with craftmanship tradition. The use of technologies and state-of-the-art materials makes them robust and safe, features which are essential for boats started out for blue water sailings.
Some famous designers, such as Reichel & Pugh and Farr Yacht Design guarantee high performances, while comfort, the typical Italian elegance, functionality are managed by Nauta Design studio, who is the responsible for the general concept and styling of the maxi yachts . while Antonio Minniti gives his contribution for the interior design and deck geometry of the medium size models.
The Genoa (Italy) based company, Pegaso Srl provides several services for the yard, namely: marketing, customer care, brokerage, and, together with the designers, the project development for the customization of the yachts.
